Fri. 7-27-12 - (route still being finalized for 2012 - may be subject to change)
Friday will be a day of contrasts: river valleys and soaring
ridgelines, current technology and history. In the morning we’ll climb from
farmlands to Hardscrabble Wind Power
Project – (owned by Iberdrola
Renewables, the largest wind project developer in the world) - with the tallest wind turbine towers in the
U.S.; a whopping 90 meter rotor diameters on 100 meter towers.
Before we enter the Adirondack Park, we’ll cross an 1875 Covered Bridge. Ride slowly and watch out for the sign “One dollar fine for crossing this bridge
faster than a walk.”
We’ll follow the shorelines of 3 lakes in the Southern
Adirondacks. Heck, why not pack your
bathing suit and swim in Pine
Lake before finishing the last 20 miles of the day?
Johnstown describes itself as the
foothills of the Adirondack Mountains.
In this historic town you can check your e-mail (before 5pm) in one of the nearly 1,700 public libraries Andrew Carnegie built across the country, opening the world of knowledge to ordinary citizens. If only they
had e-mail in 1781! The Battle of
Johnstown was fought six days
after Gen. Cornwallis surrendered the Revolutionary War to Gen. Washington at
Yorktown. We’ll pass the marker on our ride
into town. If you arrive before 4pm,
take a tour of Johnson Hall,
begun in 1763.
During
the early 18th Century, the area now known as Johnstown was the Indian resort
area called Kalaneka; "a place where one stops to fill his bowl with food and
drink", and Johnstown still makes a great overnight stop. Take a walking tour of downtown, or catch
the free community band concert
at 7:30 in the heart of town.
