If you're not a happy camper, here's a way to still enjoy the challenge and beauty of FANY and avoid the whole tent stakes, sleeping bag thing:
Hotel List For your convenience, use this list to make your own reservations directly with the hotels for each night. You will be directly responsible for the advance deposit (if appropriate) and overnight room costs, as well as any cancellation fees (if appropriate). Be sure to leave this list of contact information with your friends and family while you're on FANY. When we have filled the rooms available in any one town, the Hotel Option will appear as "Sold Out" on the Sign-Up form. FANY is offering this list as a convenience, as is not responsible for the hotel services, nor for any expenses you may incur while a guest at the hotel.
Types of hotelsBecause The Great Big FANY Ride seeks to highlight the scenic back roads and small communities tucked away in upstate New York, we are deliberately avoiding urban areas. Translation? Selecting a great route was our first priority, and after that we worked hard to find nearby hotel rooms. Some are Mom & Pops, some are B&Bs, some are national chains. You get the idea; each night will be a little different. You’re responsible to make your own advance reservations from the list of hotels provided by FANY Hotel Option. Hotel locationsMost hotels are between ˝ mile and 3 miles from the camp site. The luggage transfer (see below) will also include additional cue sheets with the location of each overnight hotel. There is no shuttle service to the hotels. Luggage TransferFor your convenience and our peace of mind, luggage transfer to the hotels is not an option - it's REQUIRED. In the past, we've tried it where bikers could leave their luggage on the gear truck & pack a small knapsack to take to the hotel. Trust me, both the bikers and our staff were frustrated with that option. Too often in the morning a hotel bag was buried under a pile of camper's luggage and the hotel person wanted something out of the bag. Or sometimes a hotel bag was inadvertantly left out overnight at the campsite, which isn't usually a big deal unless it rains. You get the point. Hotel luggage will be delivered to only these hotels on the FANY list (see below). Since the hotels eliminate the need for a tent, sleeping bag, etc. hotel luggage is limited to only one (1) 15"x15"x30" suitcase. Luggage will be delivered to the hotel lobby by 2:00pm each day. In the morning, luggage must be back in the lobby by 8:00am. Luggage transfer is only $70 per 1 bag/pp for the whole week; much less than the cost of a room, and DEFINITELY worth the convenience.
Hotel option & dinner optionThe Great Big FANY Ride started as a camping tour, and remains true to its roots. A special camaraderie develops when everyone winds up in the same place at the end of a day’s ride, and brags about the killer hill they climbed (or walked) and revels in the same stretch of perfect back road. So the dinner option and massages are only offered at the camp site, between ˝ mile and 3 miles from the hotel. The hotels are usually near some food options, listed on the additional cue sheets. Hotel people are encouraged to sign-up for the dinner option, as a way to mingle with other FANY Riders, but there is no shuttle between hotels and dinner. Taxi phone numbers (when available) will be listed on the additional hotel cue sheets. Dinners will be served at the camp site at 5:30pm (during FANY the sun sets approx. 8:45pm) Paying for hotel option Earn your own frequent traveler reward points! T he rooms will be booked directly by you, in your individual name(s), and you will need a major credit card to check in at each hotel. You will be responsible for a deposit (where required) and will pay the hotel directly for your own lodging. Roommates - Do we look like Cupid?FANY does not pair up singles seeking roommates to share hotel costs, however we will assist you in sending out e-mails to FANY bikers if you wish to try to try to find a roommate for the week.
Hotel Cancellation - In the event that you must cancel your own weeklong hotel reservations, you will be held to the hotel's cancellation policy. FANY will assist you in sending out e-mails if you wish to try to resell your room for the week, but FANY will not be liable for your hotel cancellation costs (if any.)
So there you go; a dry, comfy bed, your own hot shower, and a daily chance to check TV news. There are only a few hotel rooms left in Speculator. So if you’re planning to make reservations for the whole week – make Speculator first. (If you’ll mostly be camping during the week, but think you’ll want 1 or 2 nights in a hotel, please do NOT book Speculator. Let's keep those rooms available for people who need to book a hotel room every night.) Also - be aware thatour hold on the block of rooms in Lake George will expire 4/30/08. Book 'em now, Danno!
