2019 Route - Plattsburgh to Poughkeepsie

A brand new route for 2019!  We'll bike from Plattsburgh  (which is almost within throwing distance  to Canada)  south into Vermont to look back across Lake Champlain at postcard perfect views of the Adirondack Mountains, before pedaling back to the Empire State.  We'll cross the Hudson River twice, so that we can spend a night in Woodstock (can you believe it's been 50 years?)  Then our grand finale will be riding across The Walkway Over the Hudson to finish in Poughkeepsie.  And each day will have our traditional 70 mile route, along with a BRAND NEW 50 MILE OPTION each day.  Your choice; 300, 420 or 500 glorious miles.  Bike happy, indeed   :-)

50 mile routes & profiles displayed here; 70 mile routes will expand East or Westward.  Elevations & grades determined by Ride with GPS, files will be available for both the 70 & 50 mile options. Final routes may be subject to change.

We gather on Sat. 7/20/19 in Plattsburgh, a mere 25 miles from Canada.  The Plattsburgh City Beach is one of the largest freshwater beaches in the US, so plan to swim or rent a kayak.  Or bike an optional 30-50 mi. loop to warm up your legs.  Forget something?  There's 2 bike stores in town.  Or relax in one of 4 microbrews in town.  Plattsburgh is the perfect launching pad for our grand adventure together.

Dinner is on own in Plattsburgh on Sat. 7/20/19

We leave Plattsburgh along Lake Champlain for glorious views of Vermont's Green Mountains on the other shore. Optional  slight detour to explore Ausable Chasm (open 9:am) We'll spend the night in WESTPORT, home of Solace Cycles

aggressive hardtail bikes.  If you arrive early, rent a kayak.

Westport is home to Ledge Hill Brewing Co.

and The Depot Theatre,  both are an easy walk from camp of the hotel.  Ah, WESTPORT  :-)

More stunning views across Lk Champlain, while the Adirondack Mountains play hide & seek.  So we'll cross into VT to look back at the ADKs.  We cross the southern end of Lake Champlain at Fort Ticonderoga, (opens 9:am) an 18th Century Fort built by the French. We'll stay overnight in Fair Haven, VERMONT.

Today we skip back & forth across the NY/VT border in  "Slate Valley."  Look for abandoned slate quarries and lots of colorful slate roofs.  As we approach our overnite town of CAMBRIDGE we'll ride  thru the Rexliegh Covered Bridge, built in 1874.

"Hump Day" for sure, our most climbing. We'll start by riding through scenery that Grandma Moses painted.  We end in AVERILL PARK, camping near the shore of little CRYSTAL LAKE.

Today's route is longer, because there's just so much packed into it! We'll bike thru "artys" HUDSON, then cross the river of the same name, with the option to explore magnificent Olana or Thomas Cole Workshop's.  We'll spend our last overnite in WOODSTOCK (pack a tie-dyed T-shirt?  haha)   Overlook Bicycles is in Woodstock - check out their cool Brew & Bike coffee bike and Maya Pedal that B&B supports.

Our last day already, but there's still tons to see!  We'll bike past 2 settlements of old stone houses, built by Dutch in the 1700's .   We'll jump on a bike path*  to cross the Rosendale Trestle.  At 150' high and 940' high, it's the warm-up act for our ending.  (*Road option avail to miss bike path.)

We finish our tour riding across the impressive Walkway over the Hudson, the world's longest elevated pedestrian bridge, going 1.28 miles 212' above the Hudson River.  It makes for the perfect photo op with bike buddies you've developed on The Great Big FANY Ride.  Phew!  It's gonna be a glorious ride.  JOIN US.
